Artist Statement

A good photograph is more than just a picture! It can tell a story or express a feeling. I often use the camera to create order out of chaos in a complex scene. The image, an expression of the unconscious, communicates my feelings to others. The joy of sharing adds dimension to the image.

I use various techniques to evoke emotion. For example, slowing down the shutter speed or panning the camera creates soft motion blurs. Using multiple exposures can express a mood. Though an image might appear abstract, the feelings are subliminal. Textures which are integrative also can express deep emotion.

I subconsciously use four key elements: balance, rhythm, proportion, and dominance, in my thought process. At times, one or more may be present in an image. Understanding these elements along with skilled knowledge of working with the camera allows me to create strong, intriguing images.

Photography is a medium to communicate my love for nature and my surroundings. I am led into a world of exploration where the discovery process transports me so completely that I lose myself in the joy of dream-like moments. My photographs invite viewers to slow down and open their senses. They are invitations to look again, look more deeply and find what may still be hidden.

Brief Bio

Marie's artistic journey began in Bangor, Pennsylvania, where her visual narrative first took root. Throughout her youth, she found joy in capturing snapshots of family, friends, and her surroundings. At the age of 8, she received her first camera, a Kodak Instamatic 150, igniting a lifelong passion for image-making that has evolved alongside technological advancements to her current use of a mirrorless camera.

In 1994, the landscapes of Colorado beckoned Marie, catalyzing a profound shift in her photographic practice. She began to approach photography with renewed seriousness, honing her skills through workshops, mentorship, and experimenting with thousands of photographs. Over the years, her artistic range has expanded, encompassing a diverse array of photographic genres: abstract, macro, landscape, still life, architecture, portraiture, and wildlife. Marie's enthusiasm for each of these styles is palpable - she truly loves it all!

Now, having recently retired from her career as a physician, Marie's vision for the future is rich with possibilities. Her sights are set on entering competitions and shows, further refining her photography skills, and exploring new artistic horizons.
