Traces

This series explores memory, presence, and the passage of time through the worn surfaces of graveyard stones. I began the work while spending time with my Aunt Lib in a Pennsylvania cemetery during her final years. As she shared stories of those interred, I photographed the weathered stones, seeking to honor both their lives and our connection.

Using an in-camera double exposure technique, I layered textures, shapes, and inscriptions to create images that are intimate, mysterious, and deeply personal. Processed in black and white, the photographs emphasize form, texture, and contrast while also imparting a sense of timelessness. Whether inscriptions remain legible or have nearly dissolved, each image evokes the fragile layering of memory, loss, and love. Together, they honor the lives remembered, the stories almost forgotten, and the quiet power of stone as a keeper of memory.
